How this website was made

My first website, built in a week by an embedded software engineer. What was done and what it runs on.

The curtat.be homepage, with the name Peter De Witte, the tagline and a Get in touch button.

This is my first website. I am an embedded software engineer: I am used to firmware, kernel drivers and boards without a screen, not to CSS. It took about a week.

What was done

  • Started from the open-source AstroWind template and replaced its branding with Curtat’s.
  • Migrated my work history, recommendations and customer stories from my older blog, with LinkedIn as the source of record.
  • Built one homepage with a short version of everything, an About page with the full timeline, and a stories section with a photo per customer.
  • Added cookieless visitor statistics and a privacy policy.
  • Cleared the security warnings by removing an unneeded dependency.

Technologies used

  • AstroWind by Arthelokyo: the open-source template this site is built on, MIT licensed.
  • Astro builds the whole site into static HTML; no server, no database.
  • Tailwind CSS handles styling, including the light and dark theme.
  • Sharp resizes and converts every image to WebP.
  • Umami counts visitors without cookies.
  • Claude Code is an AI coding assistant. It did much of the work with me, keeping notes in the repository on why every decision was made.

Why Curtat is named after a 1948 calculator

Curtat is named after the Curta, a pocket calculator from 1948 and the least connected computer ever built. The company exists to do the opposite and make offline reality visible on the internet.
